Joint international symposium with Oblon on November 18, 2025

The Oblon and Maiwald firms are pleased to invite you to a complimentary joint international symposium on:

U.S. and European Patent Practice – Important Aspects for Practitioners

Please join us to learn about recent developments and current aspects of IP practice in the U.S. and Europe.  As you are aware, both US and European patent systems have their pros and cons, which do not always neatly align. US and European applicants alike need to be aware of the differences and peculiarities between the US and European patent systems in order to achieve the best results from both.

At this joint symposium, we will together examine selected current aspects of IP practice related to prosecuting applications and enforcing patents in the U.S. and in Europe.  While similarities exist, applicants for U.S. and European patents need to be aware of the peculiarities and most recent developments in each system in order to achieve the best results.  In particular, the symposium will address the following important topics for today’s practitioners:

  • Inter Partes Review in the U.S – including the brave new world of discretionary denials
  • Statistics and recent case law of the Unified Patent Court (UPC)
  • Claim construction developments – including the grey zone of “consisting essentially of” and impact of specification updates
  • Patents on AI: from the Patent office to the Courts
  • What the heck is going on in the U.S.? – USPTO updates
  • “A Sole Intervenant’s Guide: Navigating Claim Interpretation with Adapted Description Allies Against Marketed Product Rivals” – Enlarged Board of Appeal decisions and referrals in this year

Presenters will include Andrew M. Ollis(Oblon), Christian Meyer (Maiwald), Grace E. Kim (Oblon), Attila Kimpan (Maiwald), David M. Longo (Oblon), Lars Häusler (Maiwald).

Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided at a casual reception following the symposium.
