Sophie Ertl

Sophie Ertl studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich, graduating in 2003 with a thesis in the field of automotive engineering. Between 2003 and 2006 she worked in the engine production division of BMW AG. She obtained her doctorate at the RWTH University Aachen with a dissertation on high temperature corrosion of metallic materials when used in mobile fuel cells.

From 2006 to 2013 Sophie Ertl worked at the patent attorneys' office of Bardehle Pagenberg in Munich and passed the German patent bar examination in 2009. She is admitted as a German patent attorney and a European trademark and design attorney. She is also admitted as a European patent attorney.

Sophie Ertl joined the Munich office of Maiwald Patentanwalts GmbH in 2013 and has been a managing partner since 2017.

She is a member of the German Examination Commission for Patent Attorneys as well as a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), Licensing Executives Society (LSI) and of the Association of Intellectual Property Experts (VPP). She speaks English, German and French.

Sophie Ertl's professional activities are mainly in the area of litigation. She has extensive experience in patent and utility model infringements, nullity actions and cancellation proceedings. She drafts patent applications and advises and represents clients in patent prosecutions and opposition proceedings. She also has wide experience in preparing opinions for clients on technical and legal questions, particularly infringement, freedom to operate, etc. Her main areas of expertise are mechanical engineering, including medical technology, aircraft construction, automotive technology and materials technology.
